Johannes Favi is a nationally recognized community leader, human rights advocate, and founder of Caged Dreams, a nonprofit organization advancing healing, leadership, and educational opportunity for immigrant communities. His work bridges lived experience, public policy, and community engagement to develop practical solutions that expand opportunity, strengthen communities, and advance human dignity.
Previously serving as Deputy Director of the Illinois Community for Displaced Immigrants (ICDI), Johannes helped lead statewide advocacy efforts that contributed to the passage of the Illinois Way Forward Act, ending immigration detention in Illinois. He also advised the City of Chicago during its humanitarian response to newly arrived migrants and continues to serve in leadership and advisory roles at the local and state levels.
Through his award-winning documentary Caged Dreams, his policy initiative Roots & Routes, and his public speaking, Johannes uses storytelling to connect lived experience with systems change. His work explores resilience, belonging, and the contributions of immigrants to stronger communities.
Johannes is a recipient of the Jeanne & Joseph Sullivan Human Rights Award, the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago Special Service Award, and a City of Chicago Resolution recognizing his contributions to human rights, community leadership, and cross-cultural collaboration. A proud father of three, he believes lasting change begins by recognizing the dignity and potential of every person.
