Chenjerai Kumanyika is a journalist, scholar, organizer, and professor at NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. He is the host and creator of Unruly Subjects, produced with Rowhome Productions. Through conversations with organizers, journalists, artists, and scholars, Unruly Subjects explores politics, culture, social movements, and struggles for collective freedom.
Kumanyika is also the creator and host of Empire City: The Untold Origin Story of the NYPD, an acclaimed narrative podcast examining the largely untold history of American policing. He recently contributed to a new season of Scene on Radio, following his earlier work as a key collaborator on its Peabody-nominated seasons. He was also the co-host and executive producer of Uncivil, which received a Peabody Award. His journalism and public scholarship examine race, policing, history, media, culture, and political power.
