About me
Dr. Anita Fernández has been a high school teacher, a professor and teacher educator for over 20 years. Her teaching, scholarship, activism and organizing have been in the areas of racial justice, decolonizing pedagogies, Chicanx/Latinx movements and Ethnic Studies. After the 2012 dismantling of Tucson’s renowned Mexican American Studies Program, Dr. Fernández co-founded, and serves as the Executive Director of, the Xicanx Institute for Teaching & Organizing (XITO). In that capacity, Dr. Fernández has been locally and nationally involved in the fight for Ethnic Studies and the need for statewide policies to require Ethnic Studies at the K-12 level.
